Each year, Carnegie Science Center honors and celebrates inspiring science and technology innovators making a difference in western Pennsylvania. We are looking for scientists, technologists, entrepreneurs, communicators, educators and students.
Nominations for 16 Award categories are solicited in the fall, and a committee of peers (past award winners and industry leaders) selects Award winners whose contributions in the fields of science, technology, and education have led to significant economic or societal benefit in western Pennsylvania, inspiring the next generation of innovators. Categories include:

Celebrating Award Winners
Award winners joins an esteemed network of individuals and organizations whose contributions in the fields of science, technology, and education have significantly benefited western Pennsylvania. They are announced in the spring and recognized in a Pittsburgh Business Times insert, TEQ Magazine, social media, and news releases.
Each Award winner is honored at the Sat., Sept. 19, 2020 Awards Celebration event—Carnegie Science Center’s signature celebration of innovation—with an engraved trophy. A short professional video shares the inspirational story of each winner’s achievements.

2020 Award Category Descriptions
Scientists and Technologists
The Advanced Manufacturing and Materials Award recognizes accomplishments in the areas of manufacturing and materials processes that have led to significant business, economic, or societal benefits for the region.
The Environmental Award recognizes outstanding achievements in the fields of environmental protection and restoration that benefit the economy, health, and quality of life in the region.
The Information Technology Award recognizes innovation in the development and commercialization of an information technology based-solution resulting in significant business, economic, and/or social benefit for the region.
The Innovation in Energy Award recognizes the transformative growth of applied scientific research regarding the discovery and development of new, cleaner energy technologies in the region.
The Life Sciences Award recognizes and honors scientific advances in new and innovative biomedical and life sciences endeavors that benefit the economy, health, or societal wellbeing of the region.
The Corporate Innovation Award is given to an organization or representative of an organization that develops and encourages an environment that promotes innovation in science or technology, particularly systems and policies that foster creativity and maximize the contributions of all individuals, leading to significant business, economic, or societal benefit for the region.
Entrepreneurs and Communicators
The Entrepreneur Awards recognize entrepreneurs who have successfully commercialized research in science and technology to develop businesses and create jobs. Each award focuses on a different stage of the company life cycle:
- The Start-Up Entrepreneur Award recognizes leadership in developing a promising innovation in an early-stage company.
- The Entrepreneur Award recognizes demonstrated long-term success in a more mature organization.
The Science Communicator Award recognizes individual achievement or team collaboration in a body of communications or journalistic work during a year or longer that presents science and technology news and issues via any medium, including new media.
Education Leaders
The Educator Awards recognize educators for innovation and impact in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education, including: inspiring students to understand, appreciate, and apply science, technology, engineering, or math; and strengthening the teaching profession through the spread of innovative practices.
Nominees must have at least three years of teaching experience and are encouraged to provide data demonstrating the breadth and depth of impact. Each award focuses on a different age group of student learning:
- Elementary Educator
- Middle Level Educator
- High School Educator
- Postsecondary Educator—any educators beyond the high school level, including: college, university, and other certificate or diploma-granting programs.
The Leadership in STEM Education Award recognizes leadership and significant community impact in the region; building access to and literacy in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM); and advancing equity through STEM education.
The Leadership in Career and Technical Education Award recognizes leadership and significant community impact in the region, preparing youth and young adults with the relevant skills, competencies, or experience to pursue technical and vocational workforce jobs and careers; and advancing equity through career and technical education.
College/University Students
The College/University Student Award recognizes one student working towards a degree in a science, technology, engineering, or math (STEM) field, for impact and innovation: preparing youth to consider career opportunities in STEM fields and pursuing research that contributes to the societal or economic wellbeing of the region.
Nominees must be enrolled in a full-time associate’s, bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral program. Individuals who have completed an MD or PhD are not eligible.
Student Recognition at Carnegie Science Awards is based on judging consistent with the Covestro Pittsburgh Regional Science & Engineering Fair standards. Winners of the Annual Pittsburgh Regional Science and Engineering Fair are recognized in the following categories: Junior Division, Intermediate Division; and Senior Division.
The Chairman’s Award is presented to an individual or an organization that has made outstanding contributions in science, either through exemplary work in one field or through transcendent leadership, commitment, or achievement. The Chairman’s Award is conferred only in years when the judges determine someone has made an extraordinary impact on science and technology in our region.
