The Covestro Pittsburgh Regional Science & Engineering Fair will celebrate its 81st year of open competition of research projects in the fields of science, mathematics, and engineering in March. This competition is open to all students in grades 6-12 from the 21 counties within Western Pennsylvania and Garrett County, Maryland. The Science Fair has been a Pittsburgh tradition since 1940. It is also the third oldest science fair in the United States under the affiliation of Society for Science and the Public, which runs the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) and the Broadcom MASTERS middle school competition.
Students develop and execute a project by utilizing the scientific method in the 12 months prior to the fair. At the Science Fair, they exhibit their research on a presentation board and are interviewed by judges who consist of the area’s most distinguished scientists and engineers. The next day, an award ceremony honoring the participants and winners of the Science Fair is held.
Each year, approximately 1,000 students from more than 100 schools compete for $1M in cash prizes, scholarships and trips. The Science Fair is presented by Covestro, FedEx, and various foundations, universities, colleges, industries, corporations, and professional societies.

Covestro PRSEF is affiliated with the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) and sends four Senior Division students on an all-expenses paid trip to attend ISEF every year. ALL students who participate in Covestro PRSEF may apply to attend Intel ISEF. See below for Intel ISEF application deadlines.
Additionally, Covestro PRSEF will nominate three middle school students to attend the Broadcom MASTERS Middle School Competition held annually in October in Washington DC.
