Engineer the Future
3/4/2017 to 2/24/2019
Thurs., Feb. 21 – Sat., Feb. 23, 2019
Inspire your students to explore a career in engineering as they engage in hands-on activities, interact with professionals in the field, and check out presentations at more than 40 event tables. On Thursday and Friday, high school students are invited to Career Café, a fast-paced introduction to engineering careers in an informal setting. They can check out dazzling demos, enjoy café-style beverages, and chat with industry professionals. Limited capacity. Preregistration is required.
Students will engage in hands-on activities and see dazzling demonstrations, including:
- Using iPads and the Happy Atoms Chemistry Set to build models of different molecules, courtesy of Carnegie STEM Girls.
- Connecting engineering and art with a hands-on project related to animation and movement, thanks to The Frick Pittsburgh.
- Learning about electrical safety from Eaton by seeing how a circuit breaker works and how an overloaded outlet can cause the circuit breaker to trip.
- Building a clay boat designed to hold as much weight as possible and testing it with pennies under the supervisions of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
- Making paper bridge piers and trying to outwit “The Crusher” from HDR, which demonstrates the amount of deflection—the degree to which a structural element is displaced under a load—of a “bridge deck” with piers vs. without piers and local deflection between piers.
